Ha tratado de combinar las nuevas armas de la imagen y el gesto con la defensa de la tradición y, en un mundo asustado de su propia libertad, lo ha conseguido. Él venía de detrás del telón de acero, ligado a los sindicalistas de Walesa y de los muelles de Polonia y, por tanto, al nacionalismo y a los trabajadores. Lo más remarcable es que desde este punto de partida saltase a un ecumenismo potente y que lo supiese ligar al conservadurismo doctrinal. Wojtyla parece un ejemplo del dominio de la forma: lo más antiguo puede convertirse en moderno a condición de serlo formalmente de manera indiscutible. Pero también podría ser que su éxito indiscutible derivase de su capacidad, consciente o no, casual o trabajada, de representar lo que el mundo o una parte importante del mundo necesitaba escuchar. Cabe decir que el mundo abierto e incierto y la tradición tenían puntos de contacto, puentes para ir y venir de una parte a otra. Lo cierto es que la historia escoge a sus protagonistas, aunque los protagonistas la cambian un poco y los necesitamos para que nos la expliquen. Recuerdo ahora la visita que hizo a Catalunya en 1982 y la visita que le hice con mi esposa antes de los JJ.OO., cuando le entregamos la maqueta del Centre Abraham, el lugar de plegaria de todas las religiones monoteistas previsto en la Carta Olímpica. Anécdotas aparte, y las hubo jugosas, la naturalidad del personaje en su papel sobrenatural era remarcable. La Catalunya cristiana ha sido una parte significativa de la Catalunya resistente a lo largo de la historia. Poblet, Montserrat y los obispos catalanes así como el progresismo católico de los Comin, los sacerdotes de barrio y de pueblo, los del escultismo, mosén Batlle y el padre Llumà, Cassià Just, mosén Ballarín y mosén Dalmau, mosén Vidal de Sant Medí y mosén Serrano (el de la parroquia Abraham), y el padre Llimona, han desempeñado un papel en la configuración de la Catalunya de los primeros 25 años de autonomía. Y han sido un factor innegable en la persistencia tozuda de este país. El Papa Wojtyla no fue demasiado sensible a nuestra realidad nacional. Su mundo cultural y político era el de la superación del comunismo y del mundo bipolar desde el nacionalismo clásico de las naciones-Estado. Lo que viene ahora será probablemente diferente al papado de Wojtyla. La Iglesia católica del siglo XXI habrá de asumir con todas las consecuencias el mundo abierto en que vivimos. No se trata ya ahora de superar el dualismo capitalismo/comunismo ni de un ecumenismo genérico. Se trata cada vez más de actuar en un mundo que necesita ser gobernado en tanto que unidad de convivencia real.
