Molt Honorable senyor President, Excel.lentíssimes i Il.lustríssimes Autoritats, senyor President de la Comissió del Centenari i membres de la Comissió, Regidors, estimats amics: En l'inici dels actes que han de constituir la commemoració del Centenari de l'Exposició Universal de 1888, evidentment, amb un to modest, com s'escau en el període polític que estem vivint, modest, però puntual -avui és el dia, tal dia com avui La Reina Regent va inaugurar l'Exposició, no podiem faltar en el calendari- ens va semblar que la Presidència de la Comissió del Centenari havia de ser, havia de recaure en un ciutadà il.lustre. El 88 va ser una explosió de ciutadania, impulsada des de l'Ajuntament d'en Rius i Taul-?t, però involucrant tothom. Pere Duran és de la raça d'empresaris-ciutadans que ens han honrat amb la seva imaginacio i creativitat. En el camp de l'energia i en molts altres camps. I Pere Duran ha estat sempre, a més, un home d'unitat -i vull remarcar-ho avui, és el dia que s'escau per fer-ho- un home que a diferència dels que van protagonitzar el tràgic període en què aquesta ciutat va ser nomenada "la ciutat de les bombes", va cercar sempre acords i ha cercat sempre acords amb la societat i, concretament, amb els treballadors. Jo, personalment, els puc dir que recordo l'any 67, un any d'inici d'una certa crisi econòmica, un pre-anunci del que hauria de ser la crisi econòmica: vagues, problemes... Essent ell President d'una gran empresa barcelonina, amb dificultats en aquell moment, i essent jo un membre, molt modest, de la direcció d'un Partit d'esquerra, aleshores, però, molt present a les fàbriques del metall de Barcelona, va enviar un intermediari a cercar una solució al conflicte, solució que en aquell moment no es va trobar, però que va donar lloc a una declaració d'en Pere Duran, difícil, arriscada, a favor dels Sindicats clandestins, com a interlocutors vàlids. Haig de dir, a més, que l'intermediari era en Jordi Pujol i Soley. �Y EL SECRETARI PARTICULAR DE LALCALDE DE BARCELONA Quina diferència, Pere Duran! amb aquella burgesia que els nostres avis van haver de condemnar per la seva insensibilitat davant de les causes dels aldarulls. Moltes coses han canviat, els treballadors també. En tot cas, amb Pere Duran tenim tota una transició cap a una classe empresarial diferent, agnòstica en matèria d'ideologia social, molt més oberta (com ha de ser) al diàleg i a la construcció en comú.
