Una situació que no és bona, tot i ser resultat d'un procés que sí que ha portat coses positives, i on els dirigents polítics tindrien una responsabilitat compartida amb la resta d'agents socials. Pujol acaba dient "podrà pensar-se que això és la defensa d'un polític, encara més, del president del país davant l'exigència creixent de la societat. La crítica serà fàcil. Ho assumeixo. Només demano que això no sigui excusa per no analitzar si no hem passat de la il·lusió col·lectiva a la insofferenza individualista, a un cert obstruccionisme sistemàtic i a la minusvaloració de l'interès general". La veritat és que sovint el territori del debat, d'expressar opinions i conviccions que poden ser més o menys polèmiques, d'obrir preguntes i confessar que no es tenen totes les respostes, és un territori vedat als polítics, que en el moment en què proposen o accepten un intercanvi intel·lectual en termes d'igualtat queden fàcilment exposats a ser objecte de crítiques polítiques: manca de lideratge, de capacitat de diagnòstic i d'acció, d'assumpció de les seves responsabilitats en tant que governants. Per als polítics, com sabem, queda només l'expressió de les certituds, l'omnisapiència -o el silenci-, la grandiloqüència... i el seu corol·lari de repetició i potser fins i tot de banalitat. A ningú no se li acudiria negar la complexitat dels problemes que viu més de prop -des de l'educació dels fills a la compra d'un pis o la pèrdua de la feina-, però al polític se li demanen idees clares. Encara que sigui per això, el text del president Pujol mereix respecte i reconeixement, tot i que ell és prou conscient del risc de descobrir flancs en un discurs i un pensament, com els seus, tradicionalment compactes, fins i tot en excés. El respecte, però, no ha de coartar la crítica sorgida de les diferències en relació a l'anàlisi, i sobretot del desacord envers les conseqüències polítiques que se'n deriven. La crítica presumible és la d'amagar la incapacitat de governar el país darrere d'una anàlisi sociològica. Una anàlisi que és vàlida no només per a Catalunya sinó per a la totalitat de democràcies avançades: ens trobaríem davant d'un problema continental, pràcticament civilitzatori-occidental, que afecta dirigents excel·lents i nefastos de manera igual: el d'una societat que menysté els valors col·lectius i on cada ciutadà mira per ell mateix. Una societat marcada per un individualisme davant el qual poc pot fer el polític amb la seva defensa minoritària de la visió de conjunt, de l'interès general. Es tracta d'una línia de crítica, que recolza en dos arguments clars: en primer lloc, el fet que en trobem davant d'una anàlisi poc sòlida. És que potser no s'han viscut, a Catalunya, a Espanya i a Europa, moments -alguns de llargs, altres que encara duren- d'il·lusió col·lectiva, de projecte compartit? Exemples en són els governs socialistes de González i Jospin; la transformació de Barcelona. En segon lloc, en el moment polític: no podem deixar de prendre nota del fet que Pujol, que tan poques preguntes es fa, expressa aquestes en un context de crisi indubtable del seu govern: la crisi de valors socials és denunciada, justament, quan més clara és la inexistència d'un govern a Catalunya. Podem preguntar-nos: si realment existissin aquest esperit de comunitat, aquestes aspiracions col·lectives, des d'on -amb quins instruments-, i cap a on -amb quin programa- podria Pujol liderar-los? No obstant, hi ha una altra crítica possible, més benèvola en cert sentit però igualment profunda, i més interessant: que el seu discurs no sigui la defensa d'un polític davant l'exigència creixent de la societat, sinó l'expressió honesta d'un dirigent que no pot sinó fer palès el seu desconcert, i finalment la seva incomprensió i desacord, davant Catalunya tal com és i els catalans tal com són, amb els seus desitjos i aspiracions diverses. Podríem dir més: no el desacord davant una realitat que no s'acomoda a la seva pròpia visió -i que reclamaria l'impuls, el lideratge de l'home públic-, sinó el desconcert i la confusió profundes davant la constatació de la inexistència d'aquella societat projectada i imaginada, finalment irreal. I és que, al llarg de dues dècades, Pujol ha anat projectant sobre nosaltres una imatge unifocadora que s'ha arribat a creure ell mateix. Un missatge que ha donat bons rendiments electorals al seu partit, però que ha tingut efectes nefastos -i per sort limitats, com ara es veu- sobre la societat catalana, un patrimoni bàsic de la qual és la seva diversitat. Una diversitat que pot convergir en la defensa d'interessos múltiples, de país, amb la identitat en primer lloc; però que tolera malament la simplificació, el maniqueisme i l'ensopiment. El projecte d'una Catalunya única dissenyada per un president que no és només el líder del partit més votat, sinó la veu de l'esperit, xoca amb la imatge de la Catalunya real, plural i exigent. Pujol ha encapçalat un projecte on, darrere un gran eslògan -la construcció nacional- s'ha amagat, justament, una estratègia política farcida de les tàctiques, dels arguments i les actituds que ell ara troba tan inadequades, tan incòmodes. Perquè si alguna cosa ha caracteritzat el pujolisme ha estat la reivindicació permanent, la incapacitat per arribar a acords i a consensos -tant amb Espanya com amb les forces polítiques catalanes- clarament explicitats, acords que representessin aquest bé comú que ara ell troba a faltar; una política marcada pel regateig curt, el qué hay de lo mío i presentada, sorprenentment, com la millor estratègia per a Catalunya. Una estratègia inútil avui per a Catalunya, i inacceptable per a dos anys més. Des del govern de la Generalitat s'han fet, tanmateix, grans conquestes, recolzades, però, sobre grans consensos: calia construir el país alhora que s'assentava l'administració autonòmica. A vegades, les discrepàncies es van haver de deixar de banda davant la necessitat de fer front comú en matèries essencials. Ja fa alguns anys, no obstant, que ha arribat l'hora de la política: de fer front a les demandes de les persones, a vegades conflictives, en un Parlament i amb una oposició crítica i proactiva. Uns ciutadans i un sistema de partits catalans que s'han fet madurs alhora que el seu govern envellia. I a aquesta societat madura -i per tant exigent, que s'autoafirma, que ja no es pot entabanar amb facilitat- cal posar-li davant, al costat, un govern que l'escolti i que l'estiri, sense dirigismes però sense vacil·lacions, cap a un projecte on totes aquestes aspiracions, aparentment centrífugues, trobin sentit. �Aquelles grans conquestes, no obstant, han vingut molt facilitades pel fet que eren els socialistes els que governaven tant l'Estat com les ciutats de Catalunya. Un Estat de benestar l'enfortiment del qual ens ha beneficiat, i uns municipis que han gestionat de prop, ells sí, la diversitat de la societat, la immediatesa de les seves demandes.
