Manhattan Cuando llueve, Manhattan se colapsa y uno se reconcilia con su intuición. ¿Cómo es posible que millones de personas entren y salgan de miles de pisos en cientos de rascacielos y se muevan por la ciudad sin chocar unos con otros, por anchas que sean las avenidas y por eficiente que sea el metro? Sería interesante saber cuántas decenas de miles de ventanas hay en Manhattan. Son las ventanas que el cámara de Woody Allen nos hace fisgar en sus "travellings" oblicuos y lentos, que ordenadamente muestran sus cocinas chiquitas, gente solitaria, animales domésticos, miles de libros, señoras en bata, yuppies veloces cruzando enormes oficinas llenas de ordenadores al mando de gente guapa, y casi siempre algún asesinato o por lo menos un robo. Finalmente una persona en la acera da muestras de ansiedad moviéndose arriba y abajo mientras espera a alguien que no llega, o cargando bártulos, libros o paquetes imposibles de un lado para otro. La persona es generalmente una mujer más bien bella, ya no tan joven, una neoyorquina cualquiera, Annie Hall o Dianne Keaton, o más joven y opulenta como la Sorvino, nuestras héroes contemporáneas (heroínas es peligroso) luchando contra los demonios del día: el atasco, el estrés, la ignorancia total o el exceso de sabiduría, el tiempo que huye, la prisa, la inutilidad aparente de cada uno de los movimientos que suceden a ritmo de vértigo en una ciudad que no se inmuta, que repite cada día el rito de llenar y vaciar las decenas de miles de habitaciones con sus correspondientes ventanas. Todo ello contado con sorna, entre risas y breves llantos, con humor, por supuesto. Con la seguridad de saberse esta ciudad el centro del mundo, el teatro del mundo, el punto de cita. En Brooklyn Heights, junto al River Café, donde han construido un pequeño muelle cuadrado de madera, elegantemente bordeado por una baranda con pasamano niquelado (como si fuese Barcelona), en la que pueden leerse unos versos de Whitman, uno ve la proa entera de la isla de Manhattan y tiene la seguridad de estar en la mejor platea que existe.
