Fa mil anys neixia obscurament una independència abans que una identitat. Per aix(5, potser al 2100/2150 tornarem a fer el Millenari de la Nació. F a cent anys Barcelona es llençava a un projecte prodigiós que va esverar fins i tot Valentí Almirall. Pezó va reeixir. Va donar 1'empeota oecesoária. Fa 15 anys Allende. Peró aquest any, sobretot, mirem el futur. Dintre d'un més eooás, comeuga el Quatrienni de Barcelona. Mirar enrera és important si som capagos de no ublidac el present ni maquillar-lo amb robes antigues. Avui hem parlat de fa mil anys (El President ho va demaoar). Z l'any que ve tocoazem a parlar de fa 275 anys, com demana la Diada. Però deixeu-me barrejar present, passat i futur per una momeota, per una vegada, pergué són indestriables. Avui Barcelona és la capital orgullosa d'una Catalunya Autónoma. Avui, no ho oblidem mai, se sent tanmateix ciutat frontalera i porta a E uropa d'una Espanya democràtica que es desperta també amb ambició i que està aprenent a reconéixer la seva pròpia diversitat. Ajudem-la. Ajudem-la exigint i ajudem-la estimant. Afermem-nos en la nostra própia identitat, però no �2. Oferim la nostra diferència com a riquesa i no com a barrera. Reconeguem també, en la nostra identitat, una diversitat que ens ha estat donada per nouvinguts, per nous accents, que ja són ben nostres. No fórem els que som, no seríem qui som sense les mans creadores dels catalans de destí i les dels seus fills. La nostra burgesia hauria de fer-se digna de les seves millors tradicions, no solament en el conreu de l'art, o en la protecció dels nous Gaudis i Verdaguers, sinó també tot fent honor al "pactisme" dels nostres millors moments i dialogant amb els sindicats de treballadors, sense prepotència ni intemperància. Tenen massa oracles que els aplaudeixen tot el que fan, a tort i a dret, encertat o errat. La saba de Catalunya, l'esperit històric de la seva Capital, Barcelona, l'empenta dels Consellers que, guiats pel meu antecessor en el càrrec Rafael de Casanova, es juramentaren en aquest Saló l'any 1714 abans de sortir a combatre el setge. Tot això ve de baix, ve del poble de Barcelona i de les mans i de les ments que l'han construïda. Solament quan els de dalt han sabut dialogar amb les classes mitges creatives i amb les associacions de treballadors, ha estat aleshores quan Barcelona ha tirat endavant. Més que això: ha fet els salts de gegant que el poeta admirava, primer, i exigia, després, quan deia: te'n vas Barcelona, esperit català que has vençut la carena i has saltat ja la tanca i te'n vas dret enfora amb tes cases disperses lo mateix que embriagada de tan gran llibertat ?" "On "Detura't un punt! mira al mar, Barcelona, com té faixa de blau fins al baix horitzó, (...) i tu fuges del mar?" I quan Barcelona contesta, "Vinc del mar i l'estimo, i he pujat aquí dalt per mirar-lo millor, i me'n vaig i no em moc: sols estenc els meus braços perquè vull Catalunya tota a dintre el meu cor" �3. Llavors el poeta, rendit, exigeix ell mateix: "Per copsar tanta terra i tanta mar, Barcelona, ja et caldrà un pit ben gran, amb uns braços ben ferms" I acaba: "Corre enllà, (bis)(ter) Barcelona, que ja et cal esse' una altra per ésser la que deus perquè ets alta i airosa i fas molta planta, però bé et falta encara molt més del que tens" Pot algú, avui, aquest 11 de setembre del 88, negar l'actualitat profètica d'aquestes paraules escrites fa un segle? Pot algú dubtar que el millor interès de la Catalunya autònoma rau en una Barcelona forta? Es possible que ningú posi dubtes a la necessària reconquesta del port, de la platja i del mar i de la Ciutat Vella? A foradar les muntanyes per Vallvidrera i en el futur per Horta per tal d'acostar-nos a Terrassa i Sabadell, a la Universitat Autònoma i al Parc Tecnològic? A fer pujar la gent fàcilment al nostre Montjuïc, en el qual estem posant un esforç semblant al del 29? Aquest 11 de setembre del '88 és el de l'any de sortida dels trens cap al '92. Qui no hi sigui, no hi serà comptat. Es la nostra gran ocasió com a Ciutat i com a País. El Presidente de la República Oriental del Uruguay es en esta ciudad el más alto representante de un país con el que Barcelona y Catalunya tienen unas profundas relaciones. No se trata en ese caso d el recurso a una fórmula retórica. Entre Uruguay y Barce lona o Catalunya, o entre vive con naturalidad una Montevideo y nuestro país se relación que es fruto de la hist a r ia, y que ha dejado huella en vuestros nombres, en los nombres o en las biografías de algunos de los hombres y mujeres más ilustres de vuestro país. Pero Uruguay ha sido también para nosotros el símbolo de unos valores que aquí en elona son apreciados muy especialmente. Me refiero a una nera civil de organización de la convivencia, a un talante progresista, innovador Y larizado la historia de tolerante que ha marcado y sin Uruguay. Este Salón, señor Presidente, es el símbolo más notable que se encuentra en Catalunya civil. Constituyó la la relevancia del poder de una de las primeras sede 1 �manifestaciones de democracia parlamentaria, probablemente la más antigua del continente. Es significativo para nosotros que, una vez más, un presidente de Uruguay haya deciddo incluir a Barcelona en su visita a España y que, como vuestro antecesor en la Presidencia de vuestro país, haya hecho el gesto de visitar este Salón de Ciento. En aquella ocasión, hice una referencia a los nuevos lazos que la historia reciente de nuestros dos países había tejido con las emigraciones deri adas de la falta de libertades políticas. Era para nosotros, en aquel momento, un timbre legítimo de orgullo constatar como nuestros dos países, y muy especialmente, l s ciudades de Barcelona y Montevideo, habían saldado sus c entas respectivas de agradecimiento al acoger a hombres y mujeres que en un momento de su vida tuvieron que abandonar sus países. Como sabéis, Barcelona tien hermanamiento con Montevideo. Es una relación especial de na relación que supera los formalismos propios de estas con xiones entre ciudades para constituir una plataforma real de reflexión, de apoyo mutuo, de lanzamiento y ensayo de ideas algunos de los grandes proyectos Podéis estar seguro que e Montevideo o de Uruguay, como el ambicioso plan para la Construcción del puente de Colonia son seguidos desde aquí con el cariño de los asuntos propios. �No hay muchos otros casos n que el presidente de un país pueda entender tan cabalmente la significación que tienen las ciudades en el mundo moderno. Y esa oportunidad nos satisface porque tenemos la l'eguridad de hablar un mismo lenguaje si nos referimos al fenómeno urbano,_ de tanta trascendencia en Europa y, excepcionalmente en el contexto americano, en el caso de Uruguay. Creemos, señor Presidente, que las ciudades no son la causa de los problemas que en e las se proyectan, a veces, con una dimensión hiriente. Las ciudades son un espejo, un escaparate de los problemas de la sociedad en su conjunto. Pero son también un lugar privilegiado para la experimentación de soluciones, para impulsa alternativas, para generar ideas innovadoras... Y más allá de ese valor nstrumental, las ciudades pueden hacer y hacen una contri ución sustancial a la civilidad de los países. En ningún Otro caso sería más evidente esa incidencia que en la relación entre Montevideo y Uruguay. Las ciudades crean ciu adanos que viven, asumen y aman la diversidad, la pluralidad de las ideas, la relatividad de las fronteras, la compatibilidad entre culturas distintas, la curiosidad por los demás, la matización de la propia estima. Yo mismo, señor President', que viví con emoción el encuentro con Montevideo y con Uruguay puedo proclamar con �satisfacción la profunda identidad que en este sentido existe entre Barcelona y vuestro país. I am very glad to meet you in this Pavillion, which is the result of the collaboration between the Museum of Modern Art and Barcelona. All of you are familiar with the important meaning of the Mies van der Rohe Pavillion in the history of architecture. But I do not know if you are also familiar with the significance that the 1929 Exhibition has in the history of Barcelona. The original pavillion was built for that exhibition. The Exhibition marked the most important thrust that Barcelona experienced in this century. Our subway system, the urbanization of this mountain come from those years. For us Barcelonnians, rebuilding the van der Rohe Pavillion is a way of recovering a piece of our own history. And I want to thank the Museum of Modern Art for the help we have got from it. I hope you find yourselves in Barcelona at home, even those of you who come here for the first time. In our new squares, in our recovered urban spaces you will find works of very well known artists, Spanish, American, British. I am glad to acknowledge here their sensibility to connect with our ideas, with our plans of providing our urban landscape with a dignity which was endangered by many years of political irresponsability.. I do hope that this collaboration will go on and extend to other artists and architects. We want people from all the world to find in Barcelona a place where express themselves. SENYORA M. AURELIA CAPMANY I FARNES. 3 d'octubre de 1991 Entre la me y a pregunta i la seva resposta no van passar ni cinc segons. La pregunta havia estat: "Vols ser Regidora de Cultura de Barcelona?". Sí. Ni cinc segons. La seva mirada brillant, insolent de tan neta i llesta, l'havia traït. Ja ho sabia abans. Quan la vaig trucar ho va endevinar tot. Es va preparar la frase i va esperar pacient que la portés al restaurant, que el sopar s'anés descabdellant poc a poc, fins l'esperada pregunta final: "Al fill d'en Jordi i de la Basi no li puc negar res!' --va ser la resposta--. Per què ho sabia tot? per què no ho semblava mai? per què aquella memòria? per què l'escandalosa facilitat de dir el que volia? per què la impertinent honestedat, rotunditat i destresa? Per què l'habilitat de ser alhora tantes coses: escriptora, Regidora? per què li agradava l'Administració i la poesia? No va acceptar l'escapada final d'en Jaume Vidal i Alcover. Se li va esmunyir entre els dits. Ella sabia que no era un encostípat sinó una neumonia. Ella ho sabia tot. �2. Sobretot, ella estava enamorada i depenia d'en Jaume. Sense en Jaume, no sabia què fer, contra qui esmolar les eines de la seva intel.ligència admirable. El dia que en Jaume va morir, ella va començar a morir, poc a poc, amb fatalitat. Ella també ho sabia. No suportava la infidelitat final del seu company, la traïció de la natura, la impotència de la societat, tan estimada però tan feble. Avui que tu marxes, tots comencem a plegar poc a poc, sistemàticament. Això sí, amb l'espurna dels teus ulls com una pessigolla estimulant que portem dins. Hi ha escenes de violència, malalties i petites o grans decepcions que ens marquen per sempre. Ens deixen una ferida amb crosta a l'ànima. Ens parlen de la mort, de l'absència, de la privació, del no-ser. I ens hi acosten. La Maria Aurèlia ens ha deixat una marca contrària: des què la vam conèixer estem unia mica més condemnats a creure en la vida i militar -hi. Hi ha alguna cosa en el seu gest que és innegablement real, que prové d'alguna amagada essència que ens atrau intel.lectualment sense resistència possible. �3. La Maria Aurèlia ha estat, doncs, un luxe per molts de nosaltres: un luxe gratuït, un ajut no demanat, impensable, caigut del cel o, més ben dit, nascut de la terra, nascut diria- de l'asfalt de la ciutat, de les pedres de la ciutat convencional. Criatura urbana, enamorada del mar, nedadora del Malpàs, amiga d'altres ciutats, tarragonina del bell mig de Tarragona, on potser devia anar a cercar una altra Barcelona com la que va conèixer temps enrera, amb ella es tanca harmoniosament e l cicle de la vida: de la ciutat gran a la ciutat antiga i més petita i al camp i al mar. Si ara reaccionéssim polí?ticament davant el partit rival de la natura que ens ha llevat Maria Aurèlia, l'acusaríem d'insolent. Però no estem segurs que el seu final no sigui justament la condició del seu principi, de la seva vitalitat, que solament podia ser temporal i tanmateix eterna pel record i per les paraules escrites, però sobre tot pel record, que de boca a orella va transmetent una emoció incomparablement rnés persistent que qualsevol altre. �4. Qui oblidarà la cadència dels seus mots, com d'una reina de Barcelona, quan deixava anar que ens havien pres la corona però no :La mar "del mar ets reina encara, ton ceptre és lo trident".
