Thomas Mann dijo al volver de Estados Unidos al final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial que él
no se había ido nunca de su patria porque su patria era el alemán. Luego, mucho después,
Semprún, 50 años más tarde de Buchenvald, volvió al lugar y se preguntó cuál era su lenguaje
para saber dónde estaba su patria. Y se contestó que su patria no era ningún lenguaje, que su
patria era el lenguaje -Semprún leyó primero el "Quijote" en alemán, escribió en francés y
luego también en español-. No es que el logos fuese su patria, es que él efectivamente aprendió
a leer y escribir en tres idiomas europeos a la vez: el europeo es su lenguaje. Ningún idioma
solo es su idioma.
Ahora sospechamos de los conceptos y de toda razón que no sea material, datada, que no
exprese una parte de la diversidad, y que por tanto no sea particular. Lo universal no mola,
como dirían los chicos. ¿El logos? ¡Pero hombre! ¿La razón, el progreso? ¡Percarità!
Uno de los muchos presidentes identitarios que he conocido nos decía un día que si baja un
marciano y te pregunta "¿usted qué es?" Tú no le contestarás "soy diverso", sino que dirás cuál
es tu diversidad: soy catalán, de la plaza Molina de Barcelona, mis padres son tal y tal. O soy
madrileño de la calle Miguel Ángel esquina Martínez Campos.
Según esto, hay diversidades buenas y otras no tanto. Si eres de la diversidad español, o
francés, no tiene mucha gracia. Porque esta diversidad está como gastada. Esas guerras ya me
las sé. No me dicen nada nuevo. No informan. No añaden valor a lo que ya sabía.
Algunos europeos, sin embargo, piensan que no hay que correr tanto. Si Mann decía también al
llegar de América que no quería una Europa alemana, sino una Alemania europea, Ralph
Dahrendorf, un alemán de Orxford, nos advierte de que no queramos dar tantas lecciones
europeas a los alemanes y de que no nos empeñemos en querer el reino del euro para evitar el
reino del "deutsche mark": los alemanes ya son mayorcitos. Son europeos por derecho propio y
más vale no tratarles de enseñar algo que ya saben ni insistir por vías indirectas (la moneda) en
hacerlos más políticamente europeos de lo que a lo mejor quieren. Es innecesario y arriesgado.
Pero el euro está aquí y lo único que puede pasar, tanto con Kohl como con Churchill, es que
Schroeder gane sobre una ola de insatisfacción... cuando ya no hay nada que hacer.
Ni demasiada Europa ni demasiada particularidad, dice Ralph Dahrenforf. Primero las grandes
naciones. Ni logos ni lenguaje europeo: alemán en Alemania y francés en Francia. "Menjar poc
i pair bé". Pero los catalanes y los bávaros, y los vénetos, y todos los demás, dicen: la razón
nacional estatal no es la razón.
